GRAND CHUTE, Wis.--Kimberly returned to the Division 1 state semifinals for the third straight season with a 4-0 win over Eau Claire North in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.
The game was a stalemate until the sixth inning, when the Papermakers scored all four of their runs to claim victory.
Kimberly's Tanner Haessly and Eau Claire North's Tanner Halvorson were cruising on the mound for most of the game. Halvorson took a one-hitter into the sixth, while Haessly surrendered just three hits to that point.
The Papermakers finally broke through in the sixth. After the first two batters of the inning struck out, Zach and Ryan Carney both drew walks. Ben Carew then stepped to the plate and plated the game's first run with a blooper for an RBI single. Steven Jacobson followed with a 2 RBI single in the next at bat. The final run of the game scored via a bluff steal with runners on first and third.
The Huskies got two runners on base in the seventh, but failed to score.
Haessly finished with a complete game five-hitter. Halvorson took the tough-luck loss. He pitched six innings and allowed three earned runs on three hits and six strikeouts.
Kimberly will play either Sun Prairie or Arrowhead in the second semifinal of the night session tonight.
