Week 3 Power Rankings

Each Sunday during the season, we will release power rankings of the top 15 teams in Wisconsin. Our power rankings are selected by Wisconsin Baseball Central staff based on a number of factors, including record, strength of schedule, and overall team performance. Teams are ranked regardless of what Division they are in. Our week three power rankings are below. Our top five teams in each Division are at the bottom of the page.

Watertown (8-1)

West Salem (8-2)

Waupun (12-3)

Whitewater (7-1)

Columbus (8-0)

Chippewa Falls (7-1)

Coleman (9-0)

Jefferson (9-3)

St. Mary Catholic (8-0)

Lake Mills (9-1)

15. Kenosha Tremper

Last week: Honorable mention

The Trojans are 6-1 this spring. They went 2-1 last week playing out of state competition down in Florida. They’re 4-0 against teams from Wisconsin. Garrett LaBreche is on fire at the plate to begin the season, boasting a .565 batting average with 4 doubles and 6 RBIs. The Trojans will face their toughest test of the year to date when they battle No. 4 Kenosha Indian Trail twice this week. They also have a game against Wisconsin Lutheran on Wednesday.

14. Luxemburg-Casco

Last week: 15

The Spartans are 11-1 on the year after going 4-0 last week. They swept a series from Marinette and a doubleheader from Kingsford (MI). Their pitching has given up more than three runs in a game just three times this spring. They’ll face Oconto Falls twice this week.

13. Burlington

Last week: 6

The Demons lost their first game since May 26 of last year on Wednesday when they fell to Delavan-Darien. They bounced back with a big win over the Comets on Thursday, and also beat Wilmot on Friday. The defending state champion’s record is 3-1 this spring. They have games against Badger and Racine Horlick this week.

12. Hortonville

Last week: 14

The Polar Bears went 3-0 last week and are now 9-1 this season. They blew out Menasha, Neenah and Fox Valley Lutheran over a span of five days. They’ll have some tough matchups this week, with the likes of No. 11 Kimberly and Waunakee (6-3 record) on the schedule. The game against Kimberly could have ramifications on the race for the FVA title at the end of the season.

11. Kimberly

Last week: 10

The Papermakers won both of their games last week to move to 4-3 this season (3-1 against teams from Wisconsin). They topped Appleton North on Monday and Kaukauna on Tuesday. The schedule is pretty difficult for Kimberly this week. They’ve got games against Fond du Lac (6-2 record), No. 12 Hortonville, and No. 3 Sun Prairie.

10. Eau Claire Memorial

Last week: 12

The Old Abes lost their first game of the season on Saturday, dropping a matchup with Lakeville North (MN). Lakeville North is loaded with college prospects, so the loss doesn’t affect Memorial’s standing in the rankings very much. The Old Abes are now 7-1 this spring. They have a tough week ahead of them, featuring two games against Chippewa Falls (honorable mention this week) and two against La Crosse Central (6-1 record).

9. Beloit Turner

Last week: Honorable mention

The Trojans had a huge week to propel themselves into the top 10. They went 5-0, including three weekend wins to win the DeBoer Diamond Classic in Waupun. On Tuesday, they beat Jefferson (honorable mention this week) 2-1. They followed that with an 11-1 win over Evansville on Thursday. In Waupun, they beat Freedom (6-4 record this spring), Waupun (12-3 record), and Catholic Memorial (5-2 record). Turner’s record now sits at 11-1, and they’re our top-ranked team in Division 2. They have two games against Palmyra-Eagle this week.

8. Wausau West

Last week: 9

The Warriors are 3-0 on Wisconsin soil after going 2-0 last week. They beat Wisconsin Rapids 6-0 on Monday and Rhinelander 11-1 on Friday. Across their three wins, they have allowed only three runs total and scored 22 of their own. They have games against Wisconsin Rapids and Merrill (two) this week, as well as some tournament action featuring Menomonie and Pulaski on Saturday.

7. Oconomowoc

Last week: 7

The Raccoons are 7-2 this season following a 2-1 week. They beat Wisconsin Lutheran twice, including a no-hitter by Zach Clayton. They battled No. 3 Sun Prairie on Friday, but ultimately lost 6-4. Their only two losses this year have come against teams ranked in the top 10 this week. They have two games apiece against Hartford and Milwaukee Lutheran this week.

6. Arrowhead

Last week: 8

The Warhawks went 5-0 last week, extending their record to 7-1 this spring. They swept a series against Beaver Dam and a doubleheader against Verona, as well as winning a single game against Hartford. Indiana commit Jeff Holtz had a big week, bashing three doubles and a home run over the course of the five games. They have four games scheduled this week: two against Watertown (honorable mention this week) and two against Slinger.

5. Green Bay Preble

Last week: 5

The Hornets keep hold of the No. 5 spot with a 7-0 record. They went 3-0 last week with wins over Green Bay East/West, Pulaski and Manitowoc Lincoln. Preble looks like the clear-cut favorite in the Fox River Classic Conference. On paper, next week should be fairly easy for the Hornets. They’ll play Madison La Follette on Monday and a two game series against Sheboygan South. The weekend might be trickier though. They’ve got a doubleheader against perennial Wisconsin Valley Conference contender Stevens Point on Saturday.

4. Kenosha Indian Trail

Last week: 2

The Hawks travelled down to Florida last week to play four games, where they went 2-2. Their overall record is now 3-2. The Florida losses don’t affect them too much in the rankings, given the varying levels of competition out of state. Back on Wisconsin turf, they’ll have two conference games against No. 15 Kenosha Tremper this week, as well as a game against Kenosha Bradford.

3. Sun Prairie

Last week: 4

The Cardinals improved to 9-1 this spring with three wins last week. The highlight was a 6-4 win over No. 7 Oconomowoc on Friday afternoon. They also beat Madison Memorial and Madison West. Sun Prairie hasn’t blown many teams out this year—their average margin of victory is just under three runs—but they find ways to win ballgames. They have games against Verona and Madison La Follette this week before squaring off with another ranked team over the weekend. They’ve got a doubleheader on the road at No. 11 Kimberly.

2. Eau Claire North

Last week: 3

The Huskies just keep on beating up on other teams. They’re 7-0 this spring, with an average margin of victory of 9 runs. They won a two game series over Hudson last week, 9-0 and 6-1. Zac Stange went 3-for-5 with 2 RBIs in the series. They’ve got two games against Menomonie this week, as well as one against Burnsville (MN).

1. Janesville Craig

Last week: 1

The Cougars are sitting at 11-0 this year after going 5-0 last week. Each team they beat during the week has a winning record right now, so Craig is facing some good teams and routinely coming out on top. Following wins over Baraboo, Beloit Memorial and Madison Memorial, the Cougars narrowly avoided their first loss of the year on Saturday at the hands of Waunakee. Trailing 4-3 heading into the seventh inning, Craig rallied for two runs to win 5-4. They also beat Beaver Dam later in the day. It should be a lighter workload this week, with only two games on the schedule: Madison West and Verona.
