Week 5 Power Rankings

Each Sunday during the season, we will release power rankings of the top 15 teams in Wisconsin. Our power rankings are selected by Wisconsin Baseball Central staff based on a number of factors, including record, strength of schedule, and overall team performance. Teams are ranked regardless of what Division they are in. Our week five power rankings are below. Our top five teams in each Division are at the bottom of the page.

Honorable Mentions

Prairie du Chien (11-1)

Antigo (11-2)

Madison West (11-4)

Columbus (11-0)

St. Mary Catholic (13-0)

Coleman (15-0)

Mount Horeb (13-3)

Jefferson (13-4)

West Salem (14-2)

Waupun (16-4)

Eau Claire Memorial (13-3)

Tomah (10-3)

15. Luxemburg-Casco

Last week: 14

The Spartans are 16-2 this spring after going 3-1 last week. They split two games with defending Division 2 state champion Waupaca and swept two from Denmark. With seven games remaining this year, it’s looking likely that Casco will reach the 20 win benchmark. They have two games against Clintonville this week, as well as one against Sturgeon Bay.

14. Catholic Memorial

Last week: Honorable mention

The Crusaders enter the top 15 for the first time this season with a 10-2 record. They swept Watertown (ranked No. 15 at the time) in their only two games last week. As one of the few Division 2 teams in the mainly Division 1 Wisconsin Little Ten Conference, Memorial is thriving and has a chance to win the conference crown. They have games against Racine Lutheran/Prairie (12-2), Milwaukee Lutheran, and St. Thomas More this week.

13. Chippewa Falls

Last week: 13

The Cardinals are 12-2 this spring. They went 2-1 last week, falling to Tomah (honorable mention this week) and crushing Marshfield in a doubleheader. They will face No. 2 Eau Claire North twice in a huge Big Rivers Conference series this week. It could end up having big-time ramifications on the title race if either team can pull off a sweep. The Cardinals also have a doubleheader against Stevens Point on Saturday.

12. Hortonville

Last week: Honorable mention

The Polar Bears went 3-0 last week, making their record 13-3 at this point in the season. They beat Appleton East, Kaukauna and Oshkosh West. Their pitching has allowed two runs or less in four of their last five games. They have three games scheduled this week. They’ll face Fond du Lac, Oshkosh North and Neenah.

11. Kimberly

Last week: 10

The Papermakers are 9-5 overall this season, but 8-3 in Wisconsin. They lost to Neenah last week, but bounced back with wins over Appleton North and Appleton West. Things should be interesting in the Fox Valley Association title race between Kimberly and No. 12 Hortonville. They have three more conference games slated for this week against Oshkosh North, Appleton East and Kaukauna.

10. Burlington

Last week: 11

The Demons are 11-1 following a 4-0 showing last week. They swept two games from Union Grove, and also beat Kenosha Bradford and Badger. The defending Division 1 state champs have a tough week ahead of them, like many teams in the top 15. They’ll face Racine Case, Elkhorn (twice), Jefferson (honorable mention this week) and No. 3 Janesville Craig.

9. Beloit Turner

Last week: 9

Turner went 3-0 last week, making their overall record 16-1. They swept Parkview in two games and beat Edgerton as well. They haven’t lost since April 1, and are our top-ranked team in Division 2. The Trojans have four games this week. They’ll face Clinton twice during the week before a tough weekend doubleheader against River Valley.

8. Wausau West

Last week: 8

The Warriors are 10-2 overall this season, but 9-0 against teams from Wisconsin. They went 2-0 last week, sweeping D.C. Everest. At this point, it doesn’t look like any team is going to be able to stop them from winning the Wisconsin Valley Conference title. They have two games apiece against Wausau East and Stevens Point this week, as well as a weekend doubleheader against No. 2 Eau Claire North. That doubleheader will be their first action against a ranked team in Wisconsin this season.

7. Oconomowoc

Last week: 6

The Raccoons are 11-3 this season after losing their only game last week to Beaver Dam. They remain locked in a battle for the Wisconsin Little Ten conference title with No. 5 Arrowhead and No. 14 Catholic Memorial. They have a busy week ahead of them, with games against Watertown, Catholic Memorial and Madison Memorial.

6. Kenosha Tremper

Last week: 4

The Trojans are coming off a week in which they went 2-1 to push their record to 11-2 this year. They swept two games from Racine Case and lost to Westosha Central in non-conference play. Tremper is planted firmly in the driver’s seat in the Southeast Conference now. They have two games against Kenosha Bradford and another game against Racine Case scheduled this week.

5. Arrowhead

Last week: 7

The Warhawks sit at 12-2 this season. They went 2-0 last week, sweeping two games from Milwaukee Lutheran in conference play. They will play three games this week, starting with a non-conference contest against Waterford (11-4) on Friday. Then they’ll head to Sun Prairie on Saturday, where they’ll square off with Kenosha Indian Trail in tournament play. They’ll face either Bay Port or No. 4 Sun Prairie in the ensuing game, depending on results.

4. Sun Prairie

Last week: 5

The Cardinals are 13-4 this year following a 3-1 performance last week. Their highlight of the week was a walk-off win over No. 3 Janesville Craig on Saturday. Things are shaping up for an interesting conference title race between Sun Prairie and Janesville Craig at the end of May. They have two conference games this week before hosting a tournament over the weekend. No. 5 Arrowhead, Kenosha Indian Trail and Bay Port will be in attendance.

3. Janesville Craig

Last week: 2

The Cougars went 2-1 last week, pushing their record to 13-2 this season. They beat Madison La Follette and Madison East, but lost in walk-off fashion to No. 4 Sun Prairie. That means they split the season series with the Cardinals, as Craig won the first game on April 11. They have a busy week scheduled, with five games on the books. They will face Badger, Middleton, Janesville Parker, Verona and No. 10 Burlington.

2. Eau Claire North

Last week: 3

The Huskies are 12-1 this spring after going 3-0 last week. They swept a two game series from Rice Lake and beat Stillwater (Minn.) in non-conference play. They scored seven or more runs in every game last week. Their powerful offense has scored double digit runs in seven of their 13 games this year. Perhaps more impressive, though, is the fact that their pitching has allowed teams to score more than one run in a game just twice this year. The Huskies have a very difficult gauntlet of games coming up on the schedule, starting with two games against No. 13 Chippewa Falls this week and a doubleheader against No. 8 Wausau West on Saturday.

1. Green Bay Preble

Last week: 1

Preble is the only undefeated team remaining in Division 1, and they keep hold of the No. 1 spot this week. The Hornets went 4-0 last week, with wins over Green Bay Southwest and a good Notre Dame team. Freshman Ryan Stefiuk, one of the top prospects in the class of 2020, tossed a no-hitter against Southwest—the team’s second of the season. They have games against Bay Port, Sheboygan South and Manitowoc Lincoln this week.
