Week 8 Power Rankings

Our power rankings are selected by Wisconsin Baseball Central staff based on a number of factors, including record, strength of schedule, and overall team performance. Teams are ranked regardless of what Division they are in. Our week eight power rankings are below. Our top five teams in each Division are at the bottom of the page.

They are the top seed in their regional, and will face Medford in the regional semifinals on Tuesday. The Red Robins are one of the favorites to win their sectional and advance to the state tournament.

14. Eau Claire Memorial

Last week: 12

The Old Abes went 2-0 last week to finish the regular season at 19-5. They were the only team in Wisconsin to beat No. 3 Eau Claire North this season. They got the No. 3 seed in their sectional, and will face either Wisconsin Rapids or Superior in their first postseason game.

13. Kimberly

Last week: 14

The Papermakers went 4-1 last week to earn a share of the Fox Valley Association title. They are 17-8 this season, and 16-6 against Wisconsin competition. They have the top seed in their sectional, and have reached the state semifinals in three consecutive seasons. Their playoff opener will be against either Menasha or Appleton West.

12. Hortonville

Last week: Honorable mention

The Polar Bears clinched a share of the Fox Valley Association by beating No. 13 Kimberly during the week, 12-4. They finished the regular season with a 20-5 record, and have the No. 2 seed in their sectional. Their first playoff game will be against either Neenah or Manitowoc Lincoln.

11. Beloit Turner

Last week: 7

The Trojans lost their only game last week to drop to 21-3 this season. The Rock Valley South champions enter the Division 2 playoffs with a No. 1 seed. Their playoff opener is against Monroe, who they have not faced this season.

10. Kenosha Tremper

Last week: 6

The Trojans went 3-2 last week, making their record 19-5 to end the regular season. They got beaten handily by No. 13 Kimberly on Saturday in nonconference play. The Southeast Conference champions will enter the playoffs with a No. 2 seed in their sectional. They will open the postseason against either Westosha Central or Badger.

9. Wausau West

Last week: 11

The Warriors closed out the regular season with an 18-4 record by going 4-0 last week. They clinched the Wisconsin Valley Conference title by sweeping Marshfield. They only lost twice in Wisconsin all season. They enter the postseason as a No. 2 seed. They are in the same sectional as top-ranked Green Bay Preble, and the two could possibly square off for a trip to the state tournament in the sectional finals. They’ll face either Bay Port or Pulaski in their first playoff game.

8. Burlington

Last week: 10

The Southern Lakes Conference champion Demons went 2-0 last week playing against summer ball schools, extending their record to 18-4. The defending state champions will enter the playoffs as the top seed in their sectional. They will have a target on their backs, but that’s unlikely to affect the veteran squad. Their playoff opener will be against either Union Grove or Racine Horlick.

7. Oconomowoc

Last week: 8

The Raccoons were one of the three teams to get a share of the Wisconsin Little Ten title this season. They enter the postseason at 19-5 and as the No. 2 seed in their sectional. No. 5 Sun Prairie got the top seed. They’ve faced Oconomowoc in sectional play two years in a row, with each team getting a win (Sun Prairie last year, Oconomowoc two years ago). They could be on a collision course for the sectional final this year. They will play either Monona Grove or Madison East in their first playoff game.

6. Catholic Memorial

Last week: 9

The Crusaders earned a share of the Wisconsin Little Ten title by splitting two games with No. 4 Arrowhead last week. Their record is 18-4 as they head into the Division 2 playoffs, where they are the preliminary favorite to win the state championship. If things go as expected, they’ll have a difficult road to the state tournament. That’s evident with their first playoff game, where they face Martin Luther (18-3).

5. Sun Prairie

Last week: 5

The Cardinals got knocked out of the Big Eight Conference title race with a loss to Verona early in the week, but they finished the regular season with a 20-6 record. They played a very tough schedule this year that could have prepped them to make a run to the state tournament. They’ll face either DeForest or Hartford in their first playoff game.

4. Arrowhead

Last week: 4

The Warhawks split last week’s series with No. 6 Catholic Memorial to clinch a share of the Wisconsin Little Ten title. They finished the regular season at 18-4 and they have the top seed in their sectional. They are playing at a much higher level than the other teams in their bracket, so it would be very surprising if they don’t win their sectional. Their playoff opener will be against the winner of the game between Milwaukee Bradley and Milwaukee Pulaski.

3. Eau Claire North

Last week: 3

The Huskies finished the regular season with an 18-2 record and as the Big Rivers Conference champions. They swept River Falls last week to end the season with just one loss in the state of Wisconsin. They are the top seed in their sectional, where they will face either Hudson or Menomonie in their first game.

2. Janesville Craig

Last week: 2

For the third consecutive year, the Cougars finish the regular season with fewer than three losses. Craig is 22-2 headed into the postseason. They clinched the Big Eight Conference title on Tuesday and are the top seed in their sectional, which they are strong favorites to win. They will face the winner of the regional matchup between Fort Atkinson and Janesville Parker in their playoff opener.

1. Green Bay Preble

Last week: 1

The Hornets finished the regular season as one of two undefeated teams in the state, and the only one in Division 1. The Fox River Classic Conference champions will carry a 26-0 record into postseason play. They reached the state semifinals last spring, and they are the favorites to win the state title heading into the playoffs this year. Their playoff campaign will begin against either Notre Dame or Ashwaubenon.
