WIAA Summer Week 6 Power Rankings

Each week during the season, we will release power rankings of the top 10 teams in Wisconsin. Our power rankings are selected by Wisconsin Baseball Central staff based on a number of factors, including record, strength of schedule, and overall team performance. Our week six power rankings are below.

Honorable Mentions

Brookfield Central (19-11)

West Bend East (19-9)

Cudahy (17-10)

Homestead (20-10)

Waukesha North (20-10)

Kettle Moraine (19-10)

10. Plymouth

Last week: 9

The Panthers finished the regular season at 22-6 and will hope to make another deep run in the playoffs this year. They reached the state tournament in 2015, but got knocked out in the sectional semifinals last summer. They are the No. 2 seed this year, and will face the winner of the game between Cedar Grove-Belgium and Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah in the regional finals.

9. Greendale

Last week: 8

The Panthers are 20-10 heading into the playoffs. They went 3-3 last week, including being swept by No. 5 Franklin on Saturday. They still managed to receive the No. 3 seed in their sectional, where they could go up against the likes of Franklin and No. 2 Oak Creek. Like conference foe Pewaukee, the Panthers have made it to sectionals every year since 2013. They’ll try to extend that streak this year when they face either Whitnall or West Allis Central in the regional finals.

8. New Holstein

Last week: Honorable mention

The Huskies enter the postseason with a 22-4 record and as EWC champions. They’re on a nine game win streak, including a victory over Brookfield Central (honorable mention) on Saturday. They are the top seed in the weakest sectional in the field, and they figure to be right in the thick of things along with No. 10 Plymouth. They’ll face either Oostburg or Ozaukee in the regional finals.

7. Pewaukee

Last week: 7

The Pirates won the Woodland Conference tournament last week, completing a sweep of the conference championship (they took home the regular season crown, too). They enter the playoffs with a 21-9 record and figure to be a tough No. 5 seed. They’ve reached sectionals every year since 2014, and made it to the finals in each of the last two seasons. Their first game is against Wauwatosa East on Tuesday.

6. Germantown

Last week: 4

The Warhawks closed out the regular season with a 2-1 week to make their record 25-6. They earned the No. 2 seed in their sectional, only behind No. 1 West Bend West. They might have to get past No. 4 Menomonee Falls first though. Their playoff opener will be against either Kewaskum or Grafton.

5. Franklin

Last week: 6

The Sabers reached the Greater Metro Conference tournament championship game, but lost to No. 2 Oak Creek. They then swept No. 9 Greendale over the weekend. They will begin the playoffs with a 24-6 record and are the No. 2 seed in their sectional. They’ll begin their postseason at home against the winner of the regional semifinal between Greenfield and South Milwaukee.

4. Menomonee Falls

Last week: 5

The Indians will enter the postseason with a 20-9 record and as the two-time defending state champions. They’re hard to count out with that pedigree. They are the No. 3 seed in their sectional, which also features No. 6 Germantown and No. 1 West Bend West. They will open their title defense against either Nicolet or Cedarburg.

3. Marquette University

Last week: 3

The Hilltoppers took an early loss in the Greater Metro Conference tournament, but still finished the regular season with a 23-7 record. They are the No. 1 seed in their sectional in which there is only one other team ranked in the top 10 (No. 7 Pewaukee)—although there are severable honorable mentions. Marquette will play either Wauwatosa West or Mukwonago in the regional finals.

2. Oak Creek

Last week: 2

Oak Creek won both the regular season and tournament Greater Metro Conference titles. They beat No. 5 Franklin in the GMC tournament title game. They’ll enter the playoffs with a 27-3 record and as the top seed in their sectional. Their playoff opener will be against either New Berlin Eisenhower or New Berlin West.

1. West Bend West

Last week: 1

The Spartans finished the regular season as the only undefeated team in the state. They’re 28-0 heading into the playoffs after going 4-0 last week. They held the No. 1 spot in the rankings every single week this summer, and are the strong favorites to take home the state title. They’ll face the winner of Whitefish Bay and Shorewood in their playoff opener.
