2017 All-State Tournament Team
Nick Schlicht takes a swing in the Division 3 state semifinals (Wisconsin Baseball Central).
There were plenty of stars that shined at the 2017 WIAA spring baseball state tournament, but this group of players stood out above the rest. Read on for our picks for the 2017 All-State Tournament team.
Player of the Tournament: Nick Schlicht, Aquinas
C: Beau Schumacher, Kimberly
It wasn’t a great state tournament for catchers, but Schumacher stood out above the rest. He had two hits and three RBIs in the Papermakers’ quarterfinal win over Waunakee, and drew two walks in the Division 1 championship game.
IF: Luke Dubnicka, Arrowhead
Dubnicka went 4-for-7 in two games for the Warhawks. In the quarterfinals against Burlington, he went 1-for-2 with a walk. He came up big for Arrowhead in the semifinals, collecting three hits (one of which was a double) and an RBI.
IF: Seth Coker, Athens
Coker had a strong case for winning the Player of the Tournament. He went a perfect 6-for-6 in two games with four RBIs. He was 4-for-4 in the Division 4 semifinals with a double. In the state championship game, he went 2-for-2 and drove in the only two runs of the game with a double.
IF: Jess Ondell, Aquinas
Ondell was a big reason why Aquinas won the Division 3 state championship. The freshman went 5-for-8 with 3 RBIs in two games for the Blugolds. He was 3-for-4 in the semifinals with two RBIs, and had two more hits in the championship game.
IF: Drew Behling, Waupun
Waupun’s third baseman went 5-for-7 at the state tournament. In the Division 2 semifinals, he went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Then he went 3-for-4 in the state championship game with two doubles and three RBIs.
OF: Nick Schlicht, Aquinas
If you watched Aquinas’ two games, you know why Schlicht is our Player of the Tournament. He was a perfect 6-for-6 in two games and bashed two home runs. He drove in four runs and scored four of his own. Nobody had a better tournament than Schlicht.
OF: Carson Holin, Sun Prairie
Holin went 5-for-10 in Appleton, highlighted by big performances in the Division 1 semifinals and championship game. He went 2-for-3 in the semifinals with a double and three RBIs, and followed with a 2-for-4 game with an RBI in the championship.
OF: Drew Lechnir, Kimberly
Lechnir was 4-for-10 in three games for the Papermakers. He went 2-for-5 in the quarterfinals against Waunakee and 2-for-3 with three RBIs in the state championship. He broke a 1-1 deadlock in the sixth inning of the championship game with a two RBI single which essentially won the title for the Papermakers.
P: Brenden Bille, Waupun
Bille pitched 6.2 innings of no-hit baseball for the Warriors in the Division 2 semifinals against Mosinee. He finished one out away from the first no-hitter in Division 2 state tournament history. He tallied 10 strikeouts in the most dominant pitching performance of this year’s tournament.
P: Alex Jeranek, West Salem
West Salem’s ace mowed down hot-hitting Beloit Turner in the Division 2 semifinals. He pitched six innings of two-hit baseball and struck out eight hitters. The Trojans got most of their baserunners via the walk, which was unusual for their powerful offense. They have Jeranek to thank for that.
P: Tanner Halvorson, Eau Claire North
Halvorson put previously undefeated Green Bay Preble through the wringer in the Division 1 quarterfinals. He struck out seven Hornets in just five innings of work and only allowed one hit. He allowed just three baserunners during his time on the mound.
