Kimberly wins fourth consecutive sectional title

KAUKAUNA— The Kimberly Papermakers claimed another sectional title and state tournament berth by defeating Oshkosh North 8-3 in the championship at Bayorgeon Field on Tuesday.
The Spartans jumped out to quick 2-0 lead in the first inning but would lose that lead quickly as Kimberly scored 4 runs in the second inning.
Davis Matz went five innings on the mound and gave up three earned runs on eight hits, three strikeouts and two walks for the Papermakers. John Nett came on in the sixth and struck out 2 hitters.
Ryan Carney and Drew Johnson both had three hits in the game and multiple Papermaker hitters had RBIs as they never let the early deficit hurt them.
Oshkosh North struggled to keep the Papermakers off the board and also had four errors that led to a total of just four earned runs. Both Dylan Kriumei and Brett Ellstad had three hits and an RBI for the Spartans.
Kimberly advances to its fourth straight state tournament and looks to bring home the gold ball for the first time since 2007.
Kimberly 3, Oshkosh West 0
The first game of the day featured Kimberly and Oshkosh West. The Papermakers’ pitching staff combined for a shutout 3-0 win to advance to the sectional final.
Dannny Vanden Boom started the game and pitched six innings. He struck out three, walked three and gave up six hits. Cade Hunstiger came in for the save and gave up two hits and walked one batter.
Connor Chitko drove in two of the Papermakers’ three runs. Drew Johnson also tallied an RBI. The Papermakers made most of their opportunities when runners were in scoring position.
Oshkosh West had eight hits but could not score a run. Both Carter Footit and Jordan Brewer had a pair of hits.
Oshkosh North 16, Hortonville 4 (6 inn.)
Oshkosh North rode hot bats into the sectional final, bashing 17 hits to beat Hortonville 16-4 in six innings.
The Spartans used two pitchers to get the win. Josh Leib pitched 2.2 innings and Kyle Waller got the win over 3.1 innings of work. Leib gave up four earned runs on seven hits and had three strikeouts and two walks. Waller pitched scoreless three-hit baseball and struck out 5.
Oshkosh North drove in plenty of runs, highlighted by big games by Kyle Waller and Adam Penzenstadler. They both had three hits, and Waller finished with four RBIs to Penzenstadler’s three. All but two Spartan hitters had at least one hit in the game.
The Polar Bears jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning and led 4-2 after the fifth but quickly ran out of pitching. They would use 4 pitchers in the game in which they gave up 16 earned runs on 17 hits, recorded six strikeouts and walked eight hitters.
Hortonville had three hitters with multi-hit games. Eli Kramer, Brock Young and Tyler Hafeman all tallied multiple hits, but the team's bats were silenced after the third inning.
