The Madison Impact’s season came to an end with an 8-4 loss to Rockport, Indiana at the American Legion Great Lakes Regional on Saturday.

The Indiana state champion proved to be too much for Madison to handle, and the Impact were forced to settle for a third place finish at the tournament for the second consecutive summer.

Rockport got off to a hot start with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. An RBI double by Spencer Deom and an RBI single by Sammy Rowan put the Impact in an early hole.

Madison used three straight singles in the fifth inning to cut the score to 2-1. Lucas Trebian had the RBI for the Impact.

Rockport responded with five runs in the bottom of the sixth to extend their lead to 7-1. They had six hits in the inning, and could have scored more if they hadn’t left the bases loaded to end the inning.

The Impact stayed resilient and scored three runs in the top of the seventh to narrow the gap to 7-4. Trebian and Kigen Mares both had RBI singles, and Logan Michaels grounded out for an RBI.

An insurance run by Rockport in the bottom of the inning was the last offense of the game, and the Indiana champions moved on to championship Sunday at the tournament.

Trebian, Mares, Justus Benson and Andrew Pliner all had two hits for the Impact.

Madison finished the season with a 35-5 record and as the Wisconsin Class AAA state champion.
