Sheboygan Legion Advances To State Tournament
GREEN BAY, Wis.-- Sheboygan Post 83 Legion advanced to the Class AAA state tournament with a 6-4 win over the Green Bay Shockers in the regional finals.
Sheboygan got another big performance from Dylan Callahan, who hit the decisive home run in the first regional meeting between these two teams on Thursday.
Shockers pitcher Jarrett Scheelk throws a pitch.
Shockers starting pitcher Jarrett Scheelk struggled with command throughout his outing, but Sheboygan was unable to get on the board until the fourth inning. They got two runners on base in each of the first three innings, but they finally capitalized in the fourth.
Peter Green, Kyle Moyer and Brent Widder all drew walks to load the bases for Sheboygan with just one out. That prompted a pitching change for Green Bay, who turned to Brody Bialkowski to escape the jam. However, he walked the first batter he faced and Dylan Lindow tallied an RBI base on balls. Eric Schoerner then hit a sacrifice fly to give Sheboygan a 2-0 lead.
Sheboygan added another run in the fifth. Peter Green hit an RBI double to plate Alex Feudner and increase the lead to 3-0.
In the sixth, Sheboygan added insurance runs that ultimately buried the Shockers. Callahan was the man of the hour. The slugger hit a three run home run (his second home run against the Shockers in the tournament) to put his team out in front by six runs.
The home run finally sparked something in Green Bay’s lineup. They rallied for three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. Scheelk hit a two RBI double and Brandon Kellner hit an RBI single to cut the deficit in half.
Green Bay scored again in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Bialkowski. However, Sheboygan pitcher Green came up with a big strikeout to strand the tying run on second base to end the inning.
The Shockers got the tying run on base again in the bottom of the ninth, but Green got Ryan Dougherty to fly out in foul territory to end the game.
Sheboygan pitcher A.J. Guttierrez comes set on the mound.
A.J. Guttierez pitched seven strong innings for Sheboygan to get the win. He allowed three runs on seven hits, one walk and two strikeouts. Green allowed one run in two innings of work.
Scheelk went 3.1 innings for Green Bay and allowed two runs on two hits and five walks. Bialkowski went 5.2 innings and gave up four runs on eight hits and three strikeouts.
Callahan finished 2-for-5 with three RBIs, while Lindow went 3-for-3 for Sheboygan. Scheelk, Kellner and Connor Lemmens all went 2-for-4 for Green Bay.
Sheboygan moves on to the state tournament with a 19-18 record. The Shockers ended the season at 18-12.
