GRAND CHUTE, Wis.--St. Mary Catholic capped off an undefeated season with a Division 3 state championship. They beat Prairie du Chien 5-1 in the title game.
Today's win in the state final gave the Zephyrs their first ever baseball state title. They never trailed in a rather comfortable win over the Blackhawks.
The Zephyrs, who were basically playing in their own backyard, jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Mike Seveska hit an RBI double and Mack Blashka knocked a single for two RBIs.
Pitching dominated for most of the game, until St. Mary Catholic added two more runs in the fifth inning thanks to two errors by Prairie du Chien.
Brogan Potter hit a sacrifice fly for the Blackhawks in the sixth inning to make the score 5-1, but it wasn't enough to mount a comeback against Blashka, who was stellar on the mound.
The senior southpaw threw a complete game and only allowed three hits while striking out six. PdC's Casey Hogenson was the tough luck loser. He allowed only one earned run in seven innings for the Blackhawks.
The Zephyr offense was led by Tyler Nelson, who went 3-for-4. Peyton Hall was 1-for-3 for Prairie du Chien.
