GRAND CHUTE, Wis.--The St. Mary Catholic Zephyrs stayed undefeated with a 6-5 win over Unity in the Division 3 state semifinals on Wednesday.
Despite trailing by four runs early in the game, the Zephyrs managed to rally and keep their hopes of winning a state championship alive.
Speedy outfielder Tyler Nelson scored on a wild pitch in the first inning to give St. Mary Catholic a 1-0 lead. It was short-lived, though.
Unity scored two in the second thanks to an RBI single by Cody Ince and a wild pitch. They added three more in the third on a bases-clearing 3 RBI double by Wyatt Stenberg.
The Zephyrs responded like champions in the bottom of the third. They plated four runs, highlighted by RBI hits by both Mack Blashka and Caleb Davidson. They scored another in the fourth on a throwing error. That gave them a 6-5 lead, which they saw out until the end of the game.
Davidson pitched a complete game and allowed two earned runs for the Zephyrs. Nate Heimstead pitched four innings for Unity and allowed four earned runs.
Christian Jack and Nelson both went 2-for-3 for St. Mary Catholic, while Brett Nelson was 2-for-3 for Unity.
St. Mary Catholic will face Prairie du Chien in the Division 3 state championship on Thursday.
