ELLSWORTH, Wis.—The Ellsworth Panthers completed a regular season sweep of bitter rivals Prescott with a 3-2 win over the Cardinals on Monday.
Offense was hard to come by in the contest, as Ellsworth’s Jacob Sigler and Prescott’s Elliot Deutsch both pitched well for their respective teams.
Prescott opened the scoring in the top of the first inning. Shortstop Peter Brookshaw knocked in a run with a single to right field to give the Cardinals an early lead.
Ellsworth responded immediately in the bottom of the frame. The Panthers loaded the bases with only one out, and Joe Tingelhoff hit a sacrifice fly to knot the score up at one run apiece.
Nick Simon helped Prescott regain the lead in the top of the second inning with an RBI groundout. For the second time in the game, the lead didn’t last long.
Ellsworth shortstop Drake Flom hit an RBI double to right field to tie the game at two in the bottom of the second. Spencer Schroeder gave the Panthers a 3-2 lead later in the inning with an RBI single.
There was almost no offense to speak of from the third inning to the end of the game. That can be attributed to the work of Sigler and Deutsch. Neither pitcher faced more than four batters in an inning over that span.
Prescott got a runner in scoring position in the fifth inning with only one out, but Sigler struck out Brookshaw and got three-hitter Michael Harris to ground out to avoid the danger.
Sigler pitched a complete game for Ellsworth and allowed just one earned run on three hits, five walks and six strikeouts. Deutsch took the loss despite pitching six innings and allowing three runs on five hits, three walks and three strikeouts.
Flom led Ellsworth’s offense with a 2-for-3 performance. He doubled and tallied an RBI. Brookshaw finished the game 2-for-3 with an RBI for Prescott.
Ellsworth moved to 6-4 this year with the win. Prescott fell to 9-4 with the loss.
