The Plover Black Sox saw their terrific season come to an end on Friday afternoon in a heartbreaking 4-3 loss to Alton, Illinois at the American Legion Great Lakes Regional.

Plover managed to come back from a 5-3 deficit in the 9th inning of their previous game at the regional, but the tables were turned on the Black Sox this time around.

Plover took a 2-0 lead in the 4th inning after RBIs by Matt McHugh and Jake Ligenza, and the Sox added another run in the 6th via an error by Alton.

Nick Lilienthal pitched seven innings of four hit baseball for Plover to put them in excellent position to grab the victory. Unfortunately for the Black Sox, once he left the game, Alton came to life.

The Illinois state runners-up plated a single run in the 8th inning to make the score 3-1 headed to the 9th. In the final frame, Alton loaded the bases without making an out. Nick Paulda then doubled to left field to bring in two runs and tie the game at three. Drake Hampton sealed Plover’s fate with a walk-off single through the left side to eliminate the Black Sox.

Plover finished the season as state runners-up in Wisconsin and as one of the final 48 teams remaining in the national playoffs.
