GRB Academy Top Prospect Camp Preview
The GRB Academy Top Prospect Camp of 2015 gets underway this Saturday. Featuring some of the top talent from around the Midwest, the camp will allow players to showcase their skills to coaches and improve their game along the way.
Over 50 colleges and organizations will be in attendance at the camp, including the Texas Rangers and several of the top NCAA Division 1 programs around, such as Vanderbilt, the reigning national champions.
The majority of the camp’s roster is composed of players from Wisconsin, but players from as far away as Minnesota, Iowa, and Ohio will make the trip to Madison for the weekend. In total, there are 120 players attending the camp. Here are some of the exciting prospects that will be there:
Adam LaRock, junior at Eau Claire North
The Huskies’ versatile junior can play both infield and outfield, and figures to be an important pitcher for the team this spring as well. At the plate, LaRock is a switch hitter who used his bat to earn 2nd team all-Big Rivers honors last year.
Stephen Lund, freshman at Verona
Lund is a young catcher and infielder at Verona Area High School who has a lot of potential. Already rated as a solid hitter and defender for his age by the Prep Baseball Report, Lund could make an impact at the varsity level either this year or next.
Zach Gilles, junior at McDonnell Central
Gilles was the leadoff hitter for the Division 4 state runner-up McDonnell Central team last year. He batted .420 and stole 29 bases in 30 attempts. He’s primed for another big season this spring.
Ben Carew, junior at Kimberly
Carew batted in the two-hole for the Division 1 state runner-up Kimberly team last spring. As just a sophomore, he batted .333 and tallied 19 RBIs. He’ll be one of the Papermaker’s top players this year.
Grant Frazer, junior at Oconto
Frazer is no stranger to the big stage. He has pitched at the state tournament twice in his career so far, picking up two wins for his team. As a sophomore last year, he batted .368, stole 11 bases, and knocked in 22 runs. He can improve even more this year.
Taylor Borchers, junior at Appleton North
Borchers had a breakout season last spring, earning 2nd team all-FVA honors as a sophomore. He plays as both an infielder and a pitcher, and recent reports have his fastball touching 87 MPH. He’ll be a big part of Appleton North’s success this year.
Zach Steuck, junior at Lodi
Steuck won a state championship as a freshman with Lodi, and followed up that performance by being named a unanimous 1st team all-Capitol North player. Expect another big year from Zach.
Ryan Schmitt, junior at Arrowhead
Schmitt will be playing spring baseball for the first time this year, as Arrowhead made the switch from the summer season to the spring this year. Already an elite pitcher, Schmitt has touched 89 MPH with his fastball. He will be part of what could be the best pitching staff in Wisconsin.
Thanks to the excellent facilities, instruction, and opportunities to be had, it should be an exciting weekend for all involved.
