Baseball players and coaches in the Fox Cities took advantage of a fantastic learning opportunity last Saturday, when former Major Leaguer Kevin Wilson shared some of his experience with them during his camp and coaches’ clinic at Rhino Baseball Wisconsin.
Wilson, the hitting coach for the Gold Medal-winning 18U Team USA squad, passed along his expertise with players during his daytime hitting camp, and shared his coaching philosophies with coaches later in the evening.
During his talk at the Fin ‘n’ Feather Showboat restaurant, Wilson highlighted several qualities that make both a good coach and a good person.
First, he said he always gets to know his players on a personal level. Taking an interest in a player’s personal life makes a coach more trustworthy and more likely to get the most out of his team, says Wilson.
Trying to drastically change a player’s mindset can be detrimental, according to Wilson. Allowing them to stick with doing what they’re comfortable with while making small tweaks to improve their fundamentals can yield better results.
Finally, Wilson talked about keeping composure as a coach. If coaches are able to stay on an even keel, the players will be more likely to do the same. A coach who constantly gets down on his team when something bad happens can have a negative effect on the team’s mentality, says Wilson.
Wilson gave several important and insightful points on Saturday night that will have a positive impact on baseball in the Fox Cities as well as the Rhino Baseball program.
