FRCC Update

We’re roughly a third of the way through the spring baseball season, and now the conference title races are starting to take shape. Today we’ll take a look at the FRCC: the top performers, biggest surprises, and players to watch.

Ashwaubenon’s Jake Monroe, who batted a staggering .511 in FRCC play last season, is back at it again this year. Through five games he’s posted a .529 average, scored 6 runs, and stolen 3 bases. A force at the plate, Monroe is looking to repeat as a 1st team all-conference infielder.

Perhaps the next best performance at the plate this year has come from Sheboygan South’s Robert Hoffmann. Hoffmann has batted his way to a .476 average with 10 hits in 7 games. He’s driven in 6 runs and only struck out once in 21 at bats thus far.

Hoffmann’s not the only South player to impress this year. Sophomore AJ Gutierrez has posted a .471 average at the plate, and teammate Matt Miller isn’t far behind with a .444 average. The Redwings have collectively been the best hitting team in the FRCC this season.

There have been some surprising performances this year in the conference, particularly coming from guys in Notre Dame jerseys. The Tritons, traditionally a team that’s a terror on the bases, have the two leading base stealers in the conference this year, Connor Yakel and Sean Green. The juniors have each swiped 8 bases already. Yakel, a catcher, has also handled the bat well, batting .308 with 3 RBIs. Senior outfielder Alex Wendricks is one of the leaders in RBIs in the conference, with his current tally sitting at 7.

Mitch Greeton, an infielder for Green Bay East/West, has had a great season with the bat so far. He’s batting .385 through 5 games, and has already belted a home run in a relatively successful season thus far for the new co-op team.

There have also been some striking (no pun intended) performances on the mound. Jake Watzka, GB East/West’s ace has posted a 2.16 ERA through 16.2 innings, good for one of the best ERAs in the conference. Bay Port’s Connor Hock and Dakota Klein have pitched their way to ERAs of 2.30 and 1.37, respectively. It looks like those two might battle each other for the strikeout crown in the conference. Notre Dame’s ace, Nick Zacharias, has put up a 1.27 ERA in two starts so far this year.

But perhaps most impressive of them all is Sheboygan South hurler Tyler Zietz. The senior has only given up one earned run through 15 innings, good for a 0.47 ERA. If early results are to be believed, Zietz and one of the guys mentioned above could find their way onto the 1st team all-conference squad.

Going forward in the season, there are some players to keep an eye on. De Pere infielder Connor Rutherford, Sheboygan North’s Aaron Krugel, and Green Bay Southwest outfielder Mason Johanek all have the potential to make some noise in the conference. Rutherford and Krugel are both hitting an even .500. Rutherford has already hit one home run this season, and Krugel had an RBI triple in North’s victory over rivals Sheboygan South. Johanek has batted his way to a .286 average, but when he gets on base he can run with the best of them. One of the most dynamic players in the conference, he’s already got 5 stolen bases this year. Once he hits his stride at the plate he’ll give opposing teams plenty of trouble.
