Neenah vs Green Bay Southwest Recap
By Alex Cheban (@A_Cheban13)
Neenah hosted Green Bay Southwest at Fox Cities Stadium this Saturday afternoon. In what turned out to be a battle of the bats, the Trojans of Southwest came out firing in the first inning after getting a guy in scoring position; Chad Leaman delivered a two out single over the first baseman’s head to plate the game’s first run. The lead would not last long as Neenah came out with some hot bats and scored five runs the bottom of the first inning. Green Bay Southwest starting pitcher Jake Schoenholz went two innings before handing the ball over to a reliever. Neenah starting pitcher Nathan Mulzer would go 3 innings before reliever Brett Grafmeier would come in.
Neenah’s bats would stay hot throughout the game en route to a 15-7 victory. Adam Gruett went 2-4 with 4 RBIs and Justin Reed went 3-4 with 2 RBIs. Matt Gruse was also 2-4 in the game for the Rockets. Southwest put up some runs of their own, powered by Ben Heynen’s two RBIs. Chad Leaman and Mason Johanek also contributed two hits to the Southwest effort.
Southwest has started out the year on a rough patch but Coach Bob Pigeon is looking to bounce back after an 0-3 start. Southwest will play Manitowoc Lincoln, Notre Dame and Green Bay Preble in a double header this week. Southwest could bounce back and finish the week at 4-3 and 4-2 in conference play if they win out the week.
Neenah will play Oshkosh North, Oshkosh West and Watertown this week. Neenah will look to start out strong in conference play and get a win in the non-conference matchup on Saturday. Neenah could finish the week at 6-1 and 3-1 in conference play. The Rockets are hungry for a return-trip to state in June, and they’ll need more results like this to make it happen.
