WIAA Summer Week 6 Power Rankings

Honorable Mentions

Cudahy

Grafton

Howards Grove

Whitefish Bay

Marquette

Pewaukee

10. Waukesha West

Last week: 10

The Wolverines had a tough week schedule-wise, and they came out of it with a 2-3 record. That stretch included wins over #3 Muskego and South Milwaukee, who was ranked in the honorable mentions at the time. Their overall record is now 21-9 this summer, and they are the top seed in their sectional, which is one of the weakest in terms of top teams in the bracket. Given that their path to the state tournament is (at least on paper) slightly easier than most of the other top teams’, the Wolverines will be confident that they can make a run at their first state tournament appearance since 2012.

9. Greendale

Last week: 8

The Panthers are 21-10 this summer after going 2-3 last week to end the regular season. On Saturday, they lost to #1 Oak Creek, 11-10. Regardless, they are the #4 seed in their sectional, which is going to be very difficult for any team to survive comfortably. They could potentially get a rematch with Oak Creek in the sectional semifinals. The Panthers have the top-tier pitching required to make a run in the postseason, but anything can happen on the road to Mequon.

8. Cedarburg

Last week: 9

The Bulldogs finished the year 18-7 and earned the #4 seed in their sectional. They have proven they can beat top teams such as #2 West Bend West and #7 Plymouth already this year, so will definitely be confident heading into the playoffs. When Indiana University commit Jonathan Stiever is on the mound, Cedarburg can beat anyone. They’ll hope to make their first state tournament appearance since 1998.

7. Plymouth

Last week: 4

The Panthers had a rough week to close out their regular season campaign. They went to 2-3 to drop their overall record to 19-7. They got the #1 seed in their sectional and the experience of a state tournament run from a year ago should prove to be invaluable this year. Their sectional is the weakest in the field by a pretty big margin, so Plymouth should expect to make another deep run this time around.

6. Homestead

Last week: 7

The Highlanders finished up the regular season with a six game win streak to push their record to 24-6 this year. They finished 2nd in the North Shore Conference and earned the #2 seed in their sectional. Who finished ahead of them in both the conference race and sectional seedings? It was #2 West Bend West. If Homestead is to return to the state tournament for the second consecutive year, there’s a good chance they’ll have to go through the Spartans.

5. Franklin

Last week: 5

The Sabers stay put in the #5 spot in the final rankings of the summer. They are 23-7 this season, but they got knocked out of the Greater Metro Conference tournament in the first round at the hands of West Allis Hale last week. They are in a brutally difficult sectional along with #1 Oak Creek, #3 Muskego, and #9 Greendale. The road to Mequon is tougher for Franklin than teams in other sectionals, so it’ll be interesting to see how they do in postseason play.

4. Menomonee Falls

Last week: 6

The Indians closed out the year on a high note when they won the Greater Metro Conference tournament last week and swept a doubleheader from #10 Waukesha West the very next day. Their overall record is 23-7, and they are 8-2 in their last 10 games. During that span, they beat #1 Oak Creek twice. They earned the #3 seed in their sectional, and could potentially face scalding hot Whitefish Bay (honorable mention this week) in their first playoff game.

3. Muskego

Last week: 2

The Warriors clinched the Classic Eight Conference championship not too long ago, and closed out the season with a 25-3 record. They dropped a game to #10 Waukesha West last week, but they’ll have to put that loss behind them in a hurry. They play in the toughest sectional in the state, which features top teams like #1 Oak Creek, #5 Franklin, and #9 Greendale. They’re looking for the program’s first state tournament berth since 2009.

2. West Bend West

Last week: 3

The Spartans ended the year on a high note, and they’ll carry an eight game win streak into the playoffs. They are 26-2 this summer, and last week they beat both South Milwaukee and Cudahy, who were both ranked in the honorable mentions at the time. In fact, they beat Cudahy 28-0 on Wednesday. They earned the #1 seed in one of the toughest sectionals, and they’ll hope they can play their way to the state tournament for the third time in five years.

1. Oak Creek

Last week: 1

The Knights keep hold of the top spot in our final rankings of the summer. They are 25-5 this season, and they’re the champions of the tough Greater Metro Conference. They unsurprisingly earned the #1 seed in their sectional, and now their sights are set on a return trip to the state tournament. With five college commits on their roster, they have to like their chances of getting back to Mequon.
