2016 Second Team All-Wisconsin

The 2016 spring baseball season is all wrapped up, and now it's time to review all that happened during the course of the year. Our All-Wisconsin teams have been selected, and they have some serious star power. The best of the best are represented, and they all had fantastic seasons. In this edition of the All-Wisconsin teams, you'll find the second team.

Catcher: Ben Rortvedt, Verona

Rortvedt was drafted and signed by the Minnesota Twins this June, and his numbers give you a glimpse of why the Twins took him in the second round of the draft. He batted .444 with 11 extra-base hits and 12 RBIs. His on-base percentage was .568, and he was also a threat on the bases, as he collected 12 steals. He will now begin his professional baseball career.

Infielder: Jack Nelson, Portage

Nelson put together a very strong senior season which saw him hit .511 for the Warriors with 20 extra-base hits (including four home runs) and 30 RBIs. His on-base percentage was .596 this spring. He will play baseball at St. Mary’s University next year.

Infielder: Tanner Bykowski, Westosha Central

Bykowski was one of the best juniors in the state this season. He batted .488 and bashed 15 doubles to go along with two triples and two home runs. His RBI total finished at 37, and he posted a .560 on-base percentage. He is currently not committed to a college.

Infielder: Justin Lavey, Kenosha Tremper

Lavey’s final high school season was a good one, as has been the norm throughout his career. He batted .416 for Tremper with 16 extra-base hits and 32 RBIs. He was a major threat on the bases, and he finished with 22 stolen bases. He will play baseball at the University of Louisville.

Infielder: Brogan Potter, Prairie du Chien

Potter led his team to the Division 3 state title game as the Blackhawks’ cleanup hitter. He hit .489 with 11 extra-base hits and 29 RBIs. He also stole 15 bases for PdC. He will attend UW-Platteville next year.

Outfielder: Tyler Nelson, St. Mary Catholic

Nelson was the leadoff man for the state champion Zephyrs, and he performed his role to perfection. He batted .506 with eight extra-base hits and 17 RBIs. Perhaps his most impressive stat is in the stolen base department. He swiped 39 bases this year, which puts him among the state’s leaders. He will continue his baseball career at Ripon College next year.

Outfielder: Ben Carew, Kimberly

Carew’s decorated high school career came to an end this season. He helped Kimberly reach the state semifinals in each of the last three years, and the state championship game twice during that span. This season, he batted .424 with 13 extra-base hits, 28 RBIs and 11 stolen bases. He will play baseball at Kent State next year.

Outfielder: Matt McNabb, West De Pere

McNabb was an ever-present threat in the Phantoms’ lineup this spring. The junior batted .435 with 12 extra-base hits, 16 RBIs and a .520 on-base percentage. He also stole 21 bases this spring. He’ll be back for West De Pere next year, and he’s currently not committed to a college program.

Pitcher: Mack Blashka, St. Mary Catholic

Blashka’s dominance was a huge reason why St. Mary Catholic went undefeated this spring. He was 9-0 in 61 innings pitched with a sparkling 0.68 ERA. He struck out 104 batters and allowed only 22 hits all year. He will play at UW-Stevens Point next year.

Pitcher: Matt Osterberg, Coleman

Hitters in northern Wisconsin stood virtually no chance against Osterberg this spring. The southpaw went 11-1 with a 0.53 ERA in 66.1 innings. He racked up 105 strikeouts and walked just 19 batters. He allowed only 29 hits all year. He’s only a junior, so he will return for Coleman next year. He’s currently not committed to a college.

Pitcher: Hunter Black, Durand

You’d have a hard time finding a player who was as valuable to his team as Black was to Durand this spring. He had a 15-2 record in 81.2 innings with a 1.03 ERA. He struck out 109 batters and walked only 15. He will play ball at Ellsworth Community College next year.
